Justice Department Marks AMBER Alert Awareness Day

January 17, 2008

In a message marking the January 13 observance of AMBER Alert Awareness Day, the U.S. Department of Justice noted the progress of the AMBER Alert Program since its inception in 1996. The success of the program, which has contributed to the recovery of 377 children, is the result of the cooperation of citizens, media, law enforcement, transportation officials, and other partners in the public and private sectors.

The Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention administers the AMBER Alert program and provided $5 million dollars in funding in FY 2007.
