  • The female proportion of committed offenders was higher in private facilities (16%) than in public facilities (12%).
  • The female proportion was higher for detained offenders (18%) than for committed offenders (14% for public and private facilities combined).
  • In 4 states and the District of Columbia, females represented no more than 10% of offenders in custody; in 27 states, females represented at least 15% of offenders in custody.
