Notes: U.S. total includes youth for whom State of offense was not reported and youth in tribal facilities.

Minorities include blacks, Hispanics, American Indians/Alaskan Natives, Asians/Pacific Islanders, and juveniles identified as "other" race/ethnicity.

To preserve the privacy of the juvenile residents, cell counts have been rounded to the nearest multiple of three. Detail may not add to total because of rounding. More information on this rounding rule is available on the CJRP Databook Web site.

  • Overall, females accounted for 14% of minority juveniles in residential placement. In comparison females were 15% of all juveniles in residential placement.
  • Nationally, the female proportion of minorities in residential placement was smaller for juveniles committed to public facilities (10%) than for those committed to private facilities (15%) or detained juveniles (17%). This was true for most States; however, the female proportion of minorities committed to public facilities varied widely across States (from 0% to 50%).
