Q:	Did residential placement facilities hold both juvenile offenders younger than age 13 and older teen offenders in 1997?
A:	Although just 3 out of 10 facilities held under-13 offenders with older teens, they held 92% of all offenders under age 13.

Notes: Facilities identified here as not having a mix of very young offenders and older teens, may in fact, allow both age groups, but merely had no mix on the census day. The specific housing arrangements of facilities identified here as having an age mix are not known. Very young and older teen populations may be separated within a facility.

To protect the confidentiality of juvenile residents all published data from the Census of Juveniles in Residential Placement (CJRP) are rounded to the nearest multiple of three. Each cell is rounded independently, without consideration as to row or column totals. As a result, in many tables, the internal cells do not add to the marginal totals. Rates and percentages presented from CJRP are also based on rounded totals. More information on this rounding rule is available on the CJRP Databook Web site.

There were more than 2,000 juveniles ages 12 or younger in residential placement on the 1997 census date. These very young juveniles accounted for 2% of all youth in residential placement.
Public facilities were more likely to hold a mix of under-13 and over-15 offenders (40%) than were private facilities (21%). In fact, 59% of very young offenders who were held in facilities with older teens were held in public facilities.
