  • In 2007, at least 9 of every 10 juveniles in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and West Virginia were non-Hispanic and white.
  • In contrast, New Mexico's juvenile population was 54% Hispanic. Other states with large Hispanic juvenile populations include California (49%), Texas (45%), Arizona (42%), Nevada (36%), and Colorado (28%). In 2007, three quarters of all Hispanic juveniles lived in California, Texas, New York, Florida, Illinois, Arizona, and New Jersey.
  • The states with the greatest proportions of black juveniles in their populations in 2007 were Mississippi (45%), Louisiana (39%), South Carolina (34%), Georgia (34%), Maryland (34%), and Alabama (32%). Black youth accounted for 67% of the juvenile population in the District of Columbia.
  • In 2007, 4 states had juvenile populations with more than 10% American Indians or Alaska Natives. These states were Alaska (19%), South Dakota (14%), New Mexico (11%), Oklahoma (10%), and Montana (10%).
